World Bank-Prospects Group Global Monthly-September 2026

September 30, 2026-Overview
Forward-looking indicators suggest continued momentum in global activity, even as oil prices have increased, rising above $108/bbl in mid-September amid new strikes on oil supply routes in the Middle East and on oil infrastructure in the Russian Federation.
Bond yields have surged, with 10-year government bond yields reaching multiyear highs across major advanced economies in September.

Global goods trade expanded by 5.6 percent (y/y) in the second quarter of 2026, its fastest pace since 2021, although supply chain pressures and trade policy uncertainty remained elevated in August.

Special Focus: Fiscal Management over Commodity Price Cycles

Energy-and metal-exporting economies generally see improved fiscal balances during price booms, whereas agricultural exporters tend to spend more, limiting buffer accumulation.

Fiscal frameworks have become more widespread: sovereign wealth funds are used most often by energy exporters, whereas fiscal rules are more common among metal and agricultural exporters.

Sovereign wealth funds appear to support countercyclical spending among energy exporters, and fiscal rules play a similar role among metal exporters; however, fiscal rules provide no comparable stabilization among agricultural exporters.
